The largest hailstone ever discovered in the U.S. was found in South Dakota on June 23rd, 2010. It measured 8 inches in diameter and weighed almost two pounds, larger than all but the biggest grapefruits. Despite the possibility for such huge chunks of ice to fall from the sky, remarkably few people have been killed by falling hail in the U.S.
