This is your chance to win $1500 in prizes to benefit libraries, schools, and independent bookstores!
Today we are so pleased to announce a contest that we hope will encourage the creation of science book and activity clubs for kids ages 7-14. Winners of the contest will be announced January 10, 2015, and will receive more than $1500 in cash and gift certificates to spend on books.
To enter the G.A.S. Science Book and Activity Club Contest, a parent, librarian, teacher, or student must simply start or continue a club where kids read and discuss science-based fiction or non-fiction. Club organizers are encouraged to weave science activities and experiments into their book discussions. “Reading and hands-on experiences reinforce one another and help take kids’ engagement in science to a higher level,” said Barnas Monteith, President of Tumblehome Learning.
Contestants may enter through December 15, 2014. All qualified entries will be entered into a random drawing for prizes. First prize will be $1000 in cash and gift cards to spend on books; second prize will be $500 in cash and gift certificates. Sets of books from Tumblehome Learning or Trafalgar Square Publishers will also be given to winners in particular categories, such as Best Book Club Name and Most Interesting Book Club Activity.
To help club organizers get started, we’ve designed a short how-to guide, a recommended book list, a Facebook page for idea exchange, and suggested discussion questions and activities, all of which can be found along with entry forms on our Science Book Club page. Many of the recommended books have been selected from the Outstanding Science Trade Books list created yearly by the Children’s Book Council and the National Science Teachers Association. “The Children’s Book Council applauds Tumblehome Learning’s efforts to make science more accessible to children through stories,” said Robin Adelson, the Council’s Executive Director.
Contestants can follow the contest and learn about great books and activities on a special GAS Science Book and Activity Clubs Facebook page.
Our goal has always been to inspire kids to imagine themselves as scientists and engineers through mystery and adventure tales and engaging hands-on activities. Founded in 2011 by three friends with backgrounds in medicine, engineering, paleontology and museums, Tumblehome Learning has become a leading publisher of science-based fiction for young readers. Our award-winning Galactic Academy of Science adventure series takes its middle school heroes on journeys through time and space where they learn from encounters with scientists of the past to solve mysteries in the present.
